Cedar, Pine Bark, Colored & Natural Mulch: What Is the Difference?

Which Mulch Is Right for Your Project?

We carry more mulch varieties than most suppliers in Norman and the OKC area. Each type has a different texture, durability, and ideal use. Here is how to pick the right one.

Grade A Eastern Cedar

Garden beds, landscaping, year-round use

2" / 3" Cedar

Pathways, large coverage areas, play zones

Cedar Fines

Flower borders, tight beds, weed suppression

Pine Bark

Acid-loving plants: roses, azaleas, gardenias

Natural Mulch

Budget-conscious coverage, general landscaping

Red Mulch (dyed)

Curb appeal, front yards, contrast with greenery

Black Mulch (dyed)

Modern landscapes, contrast with bright plants

Beautifully landscaped garden beds with mulch and colorful flowering plants
Mulch makes the landscape. The right choice transforms how beds look and how long they stay that way.

Best Choice for Each Situation

01
Best overall for Oklahoma heat

Grade A Eastern Cedar. Handles summer, lasts 2-3 seasons, naturally resists insects, holds color better than most options.

02
Best around acid-loving plants

Pine Bark. Works well around roses, azaleas, gardenias, and blueberries. Breaks down slowly to slightly acidify the soil.

03
Best for curb appeal

Black Mulch or Red Mulch. Dyed mulch pops against green plants and red brick. Color-fast formula holds through Oklahoma sun.

04
Best budget option

Natural Mulch or Cedar Fines at $32/yd. Good coverage for general use when color and longevity are secondary to cost.

Oklahoma Red Clay Soil Problems & Fixes

Why Oklahoma Yards Need Compost, Not Just Topsoil

Central Oklahoma's red clay soil is notoriously dense and drains poorly. Dumping plain topsoil on clay gives you more clay-like dirt on top of clay. The fix is organic matter: compost or Rich Mix worked into the existing soil to loosen structure, improve water infiltration, and feed the microbes that make plants grow.

  • New garden bed: Till in 3 to 4 inches of compost before planting.
  • New raised bed: Fill with Rich Mix for a nutrient-ready growing medium from day one.
  • Lawn leveling: Use screened topsoil to level, then top-dress with a thin layer of compost when seeding.
  • Vegetable garden: Compost is the single best annual investment for Oklahoma veggie beds.

Mulch, Soil & Gravel Coverage Reference, Norman, OK Supplier

How Much Material Do You Need?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Coverage depends entirely on how deep you apply it. Use the tables to estimate your order before calling.

The Formula

Area (sq ft) ÷ sq ft per yard = Yards needed

Example: 500 sq ft at 3-inch depth → 500 ÷ 108 = 4.6 yards (order 5)

Always round up. An extra half-yard costs less than a second trip. Call us and we will help you estimate based on your bed dimensions.

Your Questions, Answered

Landscape Material FAQs

How much mulch do I need?

One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, or 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. Measure your total bed area in square feet, divide by 162 for a 2-inch application, or by 108 for 3 inches. Add 10 percent for edges and uneven ground. For most landscape beds, 3 inches is the sweet spot for weed suppression.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than buying bags at the hardware store?

Yes, almost always. A 2-cubic-foot bag at a big-box store runs $5 to $8, which works out to $65 to $110 per cubic yard once you buy the 13 to 14 bags needed. Our bulk mulch starts at $32 per cubic yard. For any project larger than a couple of small beds, bulk saves you real money and several trips to the store.

What is the difference between compost and topsoil?

Topsoil is the physical soil layer used to raise grade, fill low spots, or establish a lawn. Compost is decomposed organic matter that feeds soil microbes and improves structure. Topsoil alone will not fix Oklahoma clay. Compost or Rich Mix worked into existing soil actually improves drainage and root growth. Many projects use both: topsoil to raise grade, compost mixed in to improve the growing conditions.

What is Rich Mix?

Rich Mix is our blended soil product combining quality compost and loam. It is designed for raised beds, new planting areas, and anywhere you need a nutrient-ready growing medium from day one. It outperforms plain topsoil for garden beds and new landscaping.

What is the best mulch for Oklahoma landscapes?

Grade A Eastern Cedar holds up best to Oklahoma heat and sun. It lasts two to three seasons, has natural insect resistance, and keeps its appearance. For acid-loving plants (roses, azaleas), pine bark is the better choice. For curb appeal and modern landscape beds, black or red colored mulch is the top pick.

Can colored mulch be used around vegetables?

Dyed mulch uses colorfast dye that is generally considered safe for ornamental beds. For vegetable gardens, most growers prefer natural or cedar mulch as a precaution. We stock undyed natural mulch and cedar for customers who prefer it around food plants.

How does bulk pickup work?

We accept cash, credit card, debit card, and check. Call ahead at (405) 826-2001 to confirm availability before making the trip.

Do you deliver to Oklahoma City?

Yes. We deliver mulch, soil, gravel, sand, and other materials to Oklahoma City, Moore, Newcastle, Blanchard, Goldsby, Purcell, and surrounding communities. Call (405) 826-2001 for a quote and to schedule.

What are asphalt millings good for?

Screened asphalt millings compact into a firm, durable surface that handles Oklahoma weather extremely well. Common uses include private driveways, farm roads, parking pads, and base layers under gravel. At $26 per cubic yard they are one of the most cost-effective materials we carry.

How much does 1 cubic yard of gravel cover?

At 2 inches deep, one cubic yard covers roughly 162 square feet. For a driveway base layer at 3 to 4 inches, plan for 81 to 108 square feet per yard. Call us to help estimate your project if you are unsure.

Do you sell small quantities for a single bed?

Yes. We sell tote bags ($25 each) and offer a fill-your-tote option ($15 per fill) for smaller projects where a full cubic yard is more than you need. Ask about this when you call or come by the yard.

Do you accept yard waste drop-offs?

Yes. We accept tree trimmings, brush, and grass clippings at our Norman yard. See our drop-off page for current drop-off pricing, or call ahead to confirm availability.
