Bulk Mulch vs Bagged Mulch: Which Is Cheaper in Oklahoma?
The real per-yard math, how many bags equal a bulk load, and the one time bagged mulch is actually the smart buy.
If your project needs more than a couple of beds' worth of mulch, bulk is cheaper, and it is not close. One cubic yard of bulk mulch equals about 13 to 14 of the standard bags from the store, so once you are buying more than a dozen bags, you are paying a premium for the packaging and making a lot of trips to do it. Bagged mulch only wins on the small stuff. Here is the actual math and where each one fits.
The math: one bulk yard equals about 14 bags
Mulch is sold two ways: by the bag (usually two cubic feet) or by the cubic yard (27 cubic feet) in bulk. Because a yard is 27 cubic feet, it takes roughly 13 to 14 of those two cubic foot bags to equal a single bulk yard, and one yard covers about 100 square feet at three inches deep.
Now put a price on it. Our bulk natural mulch starts at a per-yard price you can see on the pricing page, and cedar and colored mulches are priced by the yard right beside it. To match one of those yards with bags, you are buying 13 or 14 bags at a few dollars each, which lands higher per yard before you add the gas, the multiple car trips, and an afternoon of loading and unloading. The bigger the project, the wider that gap gets.
Effort and mess, the part people forget
Price is only half of it. A cubic yard of bagged mulch is 14 bags to lift into the car, drive home, carry to the bed, cut open, empty, and then haul the empty plastic to the trash. The same yard in bulk is one scoop into your truck, or we deliver it and set it where you want it. For a big spring or fall refresh, that difference is an afternoon of your weekend.
Bulk does ask two things of you: a way to move it (a truck, a trailer, or delivery) and a spot to put the pile for a day or two. If you have those, bulk is easier in every way that matters.
Bulk vs. bagged, side by side
| Factor | Bulk mulch | Bagged mulch |
|---|---|---|
| Price per yard | Lower, especially at volume | Higher once you pass a few bags |
| Best for | Whole beds, big refreshes, landscapers | A single bed, containers, touch-ups |
| Hauling | Needs a truck, trailer, or delivery | Fits in a car, one bag at a time |
| Leftovers | Pile sits in the yard | Sealed bags store easily |
| Seeing what you buy | You inspect the actual pile | Sealed, harder to judge |
The honest exception: when bagged is the right call
Bulk is not always the answer, and we will tell you so. Bagged mulch is the smarter buy when the job is small. If you are topping off one bed, filling a few pots, or making a touch-up, one or two bags is simpler than hauling a pile for material you will barely use. Bags are easy to move one at a time, they keep your driveway clean, and any leftovers stack neatly in the garage until next time. If you do not have a truck and there is nowhere to dump a load, bags may just be the practical choice, and that is fine. Buy the format that fits the job, not the one somebody told you to buy.

Common Questions About This Topic
Is bulk mulch cheaper than bagged mulch?
For anything more than a couple of beds, yes. One cubic yard of bulk mulch equals about 13 to 14 of the standard two cubic foot bags from the store. Even at a few dollars a bag, buying that same volume in bags costs noticeably more per yard than buying it bulk, and that is before you count the trips, the gas, and the time loading and hauling. Bulk wins on price once the job is any real size.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it takes about 13 to 14 of the common two cubic foot bags to equal one bulk yard. One cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at three inches deep. If your project needs more than about a dozen bags, you are into bulk territory.
When does bagged mulch make more sense than bulk?
Bagged mulch is the better call for small jobs: a single bed, a few containers, a touch-up, or any time you have no truck and nowhere to dump a pile. Bags are easy to move one at a time, easy to store if you have leftovers, and they keep the driveway clean. For one or two bags' worth of mulch, bulk is not worth the trip.
Is bulk mulch better quality than bagged?
It can be, mostly because you can see exactly what you are getting. With bulk you look at the actual pile before you buy, so you know the grind, the color, and how fresh it is. Bagged mulch is sealed, can sit in a lot for a long time, and sometimes heats up or sours inside the bag. Neither is automatically better, but bulk gives you a clearer look at the product.
